About the Work

The water level is the trace continuously inscribed upon this land by the wind, tides, time, and the lives of all beings. The Zeng-wen River, flowing through Tainan, has nurtured fertile soil and sustained human life. At the same time, its currents have transformed the landscape, at times engulfing settlements and constantly rewriting the contours of the land. Through field research into this place, we contemplate the boundaries shaped by the mutual influences between humans and nature. "Threshold" is an exploration that traces the landscapes co-created by humans and nature.

About the Artist

Tomoo Nagai and Yuriko Shimamura are a collaborative unit working across sound and painting. Based on site-specific research, they create performances and installations using sound, pigments, and locally collected materials. The unit’s name is inspired by a fisherman gazing out at the sea and a bird circling the sky, symbolizing the intersection of different perceptions and their exploration of space through the relationships between place, memory, and environment.
