About the Work

This work uses photography to document check dams along Guidan Creek, exposing the images directly onto man-made concrete slabs. When dry, the image appears blurred and faint; once wetted with water, the picture comes into sharp clarity. This interplay between clarity and blur subtly questions whether nature loses its innate vitality when artificial concrete intervenes in a river. Nature Disappearing uses the drying, fading image as a metaphor for the "disappearance of nature." As the image reappears with water, it asks: what has the check dam erased, and what remains forever untouched?

About the Artist

Working primarily in photography, Tsai's recent work focuses on human-environment relationships, largely presented through landscape forms. He continuously asks: how can an image serve as a medium of communication? His work emphasizes that photography is not a one-way gaze, but an expression of relational existence between people and things, exploring contemporary sociality through these connections. Beyond his artistic practice, he researches the history and theory of Taiwanese landscape photography.
